The symmetry classes and its decomposition into equivalence classes of linear third order differential equations is described. They are identified by suitable canonical representatives. Membership in any of them may be decided in terms of certain invariants. The transformation to canonical form for large classes of equations is explicitly obtained. It is outlined how it may be utilized for obtaining explicit solutions.
