Description: The article discusses some applications of the formal theory of differential equations in the context of Lie symmetry analysis. This includes a comparison of different definitions of symmetries stressing the importance of local solvability and some "counting games": determining the size of the symmetry group and related issues. Special emphasis is put on a proper formulation of the non-classical method which is usually applied only in a very restricted manner.
