Description: In this short letter, we discuss the role of discrete symmetries for the structural identifiability and observability analysis of finite-dimensional control systems. We show how to compute discrete symmetries via the Thomas decomposition and argue that their existence distinguishes between local and global identifiability / observability. Some concrete examples are presented.
