Description: This article discusses some applications of the theory of involutive bases (discussed in [68, 27, 28] ) to field theories (constraint algorithms, degrees of freedom count and formulation of initial value problems). It is closely related to the articles [8, 9, 17] but uses a purely algebraic language in contrast to the intrinsic geometric approach taken there.
